The Heart-Shaped Igluhut is the latest expression of this philosophy. Designed as a social retreat, this model transforms outdoor gatherings into unforgettable experiences. But where did this idea originate? We spoke with architect and designer Jason Lawlor, the creative mind behind this concept, to explore the inspiration, design process, and vision that brought this remarkable structure to life.
What prompted the concept of the Heart-Shaped Igluhut?
Iglucraft and I were talking about social spaces and how the cabins and saunas relate to these. In Estonia, saunas are very social occasions, but what about an event that isn’t centered on a sauna? What if we just wanted to hang out; to be outdoors with friends but protected from the elements? The Hut came about because we realised we wanted somewhere different where we could be together, chilled out and somehow kind of cozy.
Where did the Heart Shape idea come from?
Iglu’s handcrafted woodwork has always charmed me and I thought combining two large arched frames to form a corner would be a really cool display of their skills. Even better this would create a great view and a really striking entrance. Then, when viewed from above, adding the curved seating areas naturally forms this heart shape, which is pretty appropriate for a space to enjoy with friends.
Scattered across the Estonian countryside there are huts for hikers to use for rest and recuperation, did these inform your ideas?
I think the grounding of this cabin in those principles of shelter is really important. With the Igluhut you can seek a shady nook away from the hot summer sun. Or you can enjoy the rustling of autumn leaves while shielded from the breeze. The central fireplace opens up more possibilities; if a chill sets in on a summer's evening the night can be extended with new warmth, or simply wrapping up in the depths of winter with a flickering fire for company.
Are there particular details that you expect people to enjoy?
I think the thing with the Heart Shaped Igluhut is it takes many of the details that we know people already appreciate, such as the Iglucraft’s shapes and shingles, and brings them together to offer something new. Beyond this, the Igluhut can be detailed in many ways to suit a particular vision for its use. For example, the seating can be neat timber benches or comfortable upholstered cushions. The archways can be completely open or glazed with glass for weather protection. The part that hopefully remains constant is that the Hut creates a connection between the inside and outside, and that this quality can be enjoyed by all.
