The Complete Guide to Caring for Your Iglusauna

10 Mar 2025

Got yourself an Iglusauna? That’s a fantastic choice! These handcrafted beauties aren’t just a place to relax—they’re an investment in wellness. But like anything made from natural materials, they need proper care to preserve their quality. Here’s how to keep your sauna looking great and working perfectly for years to come.

Caring for the Exterior

Exterior shingles are treated with Teknos Aqua Primer product, which is tinted with a UV- resistant paint pigment and does not require additional coating.

The exterior shingles are living material; therefore, depending on the climate, the shingles can expand and shrink. As a result, some unpainted surfaces can become visible. Be assured that this is perfectly normal and will not affect the lifespan of the sauna. To treat uncoated surfaces, please use the paint provided together with the sauna.

It is also normal for some shingles to crack because of drying. This will not affect the lifespan of the sauna and will not cause leaks since shingles are triple-layered. In the event of a fully damaged shingle, use the replacement shingle that comes with the sauna.

Regularly brush off leaves and moss using a soft brush, and avoid pressure washers, which can damage the surface.

Maintaining the Interior

The sauna’s interior wood surfaces are treated with water-based sauna wax to protect against humidity and temperature fluctuations.

Saunas endure large wide temperature and humidity fluctuations, and the interior floor is a living material. Once a sauna is heated, the temperature of the shingles rises, and their moisture content falls. As a result, the shingles tend to shrink and bend. Be assured this is natural and does not affect the lifespan or the quality of the sauna.

To maintain the flooring, avoid damaging the wooden floor with stones or any other sharp objects. If needed, a light sanding and a fresh coat of wax will restore its beauty.

Wood pieces, such as inlays and ceilings, may darken over time. This is natural and is caused by heat and dust accumulating on the stones.

Keeping Your Sauna Benches Clean

Sauna benches are made of natural aspen and treated with water-based sauna wax.

Due to the use of the sauna, tainting of the benches is entirely normal.

For cleaning the benches, we recommend using a natural cleaner within the range of 6ph up to 8ph and rinsing the benches with clean water after the cleaning.

Sauna benches and seats should be cleaned at least once a year, also paying attention to the underside of the seats, the edges of the boards, and the support structures.

If the cleaning doesn’t bring the desired results, use fine sandpaper and recoat the seats with water-based sauna wax afterward.

After Each Sauna Use

Clean the interior surfaces

Open the door for ventilation.

Keep the heater on and warm until the sauna is dry.
